Artists Biographies

Alan Desborough - Sculptor.

Born in London in 1946, he is a self-taught sculptor and a resident artist at the Community Centre, 48 Boundary Road, London. His work has been exhibited locally and in an adult education centre. His Bird Beast was inspired by flrancusi's The Princess; Torso's Camphor wood originally gave off its own perfume which has since faded. He is in a wheelchair and has jerky movements.

Stephen Dwoskin - Film maker, artist and photographer.

Born in New York on 15th January 1939. Studied at Parsons School of Design, at the New School of Social Research, the Pratt Graphic Art Center and became a member of the American Institute of Graphic Art. Disabled with Polio . Exhibited paintings in a mixed show in New York and another in London. Had a one man exhibition in the Redmark Gallery, London.

Christoph Eggli - Painter

This Swiss artist was born on 8 June 1952 near Zurich. He was trained as a draftsman but due to continual loss of strength he finally gave up his profession, and, at the age of 22 began to teach himself to paint. He is the younger brother of the Berne authoress, Ursula Eggli, who suffers from the same progressive muscular disease. He lives in Zurich and in 1980 was awarded the Art Scholarship of the Canton of Zurich.

Berud Fullenbach - Artist

Berud was born in July 1953 in Neuwied/ Rhine, Germany. He was always interested in painting and art but he took up a profession as a machine fitter. Shortly before the final examination of his training, he had an accident and became paralysed. During rehabilitation, his interest in painting developed. He studied the Old Masters: Rembrandt, Diirer and Brueghel and now he is developing a style of his own. He has had several exhibitions in Germany:-

Jonathan Griffith - Artist and poet

Born on 6 August 1937 an athetoid spastic and has since developed an interesting, if frustrating, stutter. He had no artistic training except for evening classes but paints and writes. His painting has been exhibited at the Liverpool Academy of Art and at various Quaker Art Exhibitions. He works full-time as a computer programmer.

Arnie Harrison - Painter

Born in 1940, he had no formal art training but has always painted. He has worked in many jobs: on a market, in a mine, in an aircraft factory and on a farm. He has developed Multiple Sclerosis and now paints at home full-time. He had a one-man exhibition in June 1931 at the Old Boar Art Centre, Barnet.

Richard Jones - Painter

Born in Cardiff and now living in St Albans. Studied physics and chemistry at the University of Wales, Swansea and at this time began painting, mainly aviation subjects. In 1972 was elected full member of the Guild of Aviation Artists. In 1974 was invited to join the Inscape Group. Studied drawing and painting at the St Albans College of Art and the Camden Institute. During 1974 and 1975 studied the Mische Technique under Professor Ernst Fuchs and Wolfgang Manner.

Harry Kennett - Sculptor

Born 8th November 1928 in Sheerness, Kent. Lost his sight at the age of 13. Has received no training in sculpture but has made many pieces during the last 12 years, mostly animal and male figures. Man and Dog was rejected by a local exhibition of disabled artists because the judges couldn't believe it had been done by a blind person. Harry Kennett also plays the tuba, is a county chess player. His sculpture is in clay and terra cotta.

Brigitte Lange Helms - Artist

Born and living in Muenster, Germany, Brigitte uses a wheelchair as a result of an accident in 1969. She decided to leave her job in a large company and go to a graphic design and communication training college to improve her drawing and linocutting. She now works as a freelance graphic desinger and artist. She feels a great affinity with the far east and much of her work portrays it's mythology. She values her works as if they are her children but she feels her real children sometimes distract her from her work. Brigitte has had 6 one woman exhibitions at home and abroad.

Nabil Shaban - Actor and painter

Born 12 February 1953 in Amman, Jordan, but has been living in Britain since he was four. He's had no artistic training except 'O' and 'A' level Art taken in part-time courses. His early life is described in his essay in this catalogue. His degree in psychology and philosophy was at Surrey University. He uses a wheelchair, was born with osteogenesis imperfecta (aka Brittle Bones ). He showed two paintings at the exhibition at the Congress of Rehab International in Vienna in April 1981 and at the 1YDP Exhibition in Atlanta, Georgia in June 1981. lie is a founder of the Graeac Theatre Company.

Rosemary Sutcliffe - Authoress

The first few years of her life were spent trailing around the world with her mother following her father who was in the Navy, Because of this and also because she developed Juvenile Arthritis at the age of three, she had no proper early schooling. When she did go to school, she hated it and left after four years, at the age of 14. She went to art school for three years before the war. She took up miniature painting because she thought she'd never be able to handle big canvases. At the end of the war she switched to writing because she could write as big as she liked. Her first book was published in 1950 and she's been writing historical novels ever since: four for adults but the remaining 30 for children. She won the Carnegie Medal in 1959 for her book The Lantern Bearers as the best British Children's Book of the Year, and has collected many other awards over the years, from the UK, USA and elsewhere. In 1975 she got the OBE for services to children's liters hire. Her book The Eagle of the Ninth was serialized on television.

Nelson Tamagnini - Artist

Nelson de Vasconcelos Tamagnini Baibosa was born in Portugal on 30 November 1942. A descendent of the Sacro Santa Familia Imperial Romana, he has been leading the life of a travelling gypsy. In 1971 he did a foundation course at Hammersmith College of Art and then studied at Chelsea School of Art until 1974, and received a BA. He plays a 12-string Portuguese guitar and worked with Theatre 84 and gave a short performance at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1974. He uses unconventional materials in his visual art and much of it is three dimensional; he specialises in heads, some decorated internally. He considers he became disabled after he was arrested in Portugal following a misunderstanding, and was shot in the head, tortured and given electric shock treatment, but he hopes recovery will take place with time. He has left much of his works behind him on walls and doors during his travels, which appeals to his Fadista sense of humour.

Clive Turner - Artist

Born in Stockport on 7 November 1953. He started a degree in zoology at Durham but became mentally ill. He started studying at Stockport Art College but after six months went into a mental hospital. He is now very prolific although much of his drawing is done on used envelopes and crushed in his pockets. He writes poems and illustrates them and writes fantasy prose. He was shown at a one-man exhibition in a local library and in a mixed exhibition in Stockport Art Gallery.

George Walker - Painter

Born in 1930 in London. His formal art training was four years at Harrow Art School starting in 1946, and he was exhibited at Camden Arts Centre in 1970. He is agoraphobic and leads a very solitary life.

Victor Willing - Painter

Born in 1928 in Alexandria. Studied at the Slade from 1948-54.
