Join our Demo!

On 9th February 2008, disabled Outsiders members at the London Club Lunch were invited to join in a discussion on the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill, and an overwhelming majority agreed. We sat around a table and discussed the consequences for disabled people if the Bill were made Law, and it became illegal to pay for sex and download and possess extreme pornography.

Unanimously, we agreed to hold a demonstration, and this was fixed for Tuesday 26th February 2.30-4.30 on Westminster Bridge. The following suggestions were also agreed:

  • we approach Anne McGuire, Parliamentary Under Secretary (Disabled People) with Ministerial Responsibilities of Disability legislation and Equality and Human Rights Commission, and also David Blunkett, asking for their support.
  • A small delegation of disabled people seek a private consultation with those who are responsible for pushing the Bill through: Harriet Harman (Minister responsible for Equality!), Barbara Follet, Vera Baird and Maria Eagle (Ex-Minister for Disability!).
  • We gather a page of testimonies by people who sell sex or work in and/or produce extreme pornography, to prove that they do so of their own free will (and hardly any, are ever forced). Such workers are welcome on the demo and sex workers will carry the traditional red umbrella.
  • Our demonstration be dignified and serious, with police permission, and clever placards.
  • We will warm up afterwards with a cup of tea in The Marriott next door.
  • Press releases will be sent to the disability and general media.
