Outsiders Midlands Lunch this Saturday

The next Midlands Outsiders Lunch will be this Saturday from 1pm – 5pm at The Old Contemptibles pub, 176 Edmund street, Snow Hill, Birmingham B3 2HB

We sit in the restaurant where there is an accessible loo. The food is absolutely delicious, the pub friendly and funky, and our lunch is run by a beautiful jewellery student, Angharad. See this testimony of the last lunch:

I passionately urge you to attend a lunch, even if you feel you’re not quite ready to attend.  To be honest, you may never feel fully ready to meet others in person, so you have to take a leap of faith, secure in the knowledge that Outsiders are amongst the very nicest people in the whole world.
I know nice people when I meet them! I’m a recently new Outsiders’ member and I had never been to a lunch before, and felt so welcomed!   We all were completely being ourselves, no affectation required or expected.  It was such a gentle and soothing atmosphere and quite unintentionally so.  Tuppy and host, Angharad introduced me to people I’d never met, and advised who would like to speak to me.  I thus had permission to approach those I would never have otherwise dared to speak with.  You have reservations about face-to-face meeting?  Dismiss your reservations as the party-poopers they are, and reserve your place at the Outsiders’ dinner-table.  You don’t have to eat food to attend a lunch, you just be who you are and let yourself enjoy the time together with others.  Truly, Luv from Numa.’

Outsiders London Lunch on 11th April

Following our amazing lunch were Nikki Fox recorded our workshop and where members who had been in touch in our Clubhouse were able to meet in person we expect another blast on 11th April.

The workshop this time will be a discussion on how to react when you are rejected because of your disability. Many members in the past have come up with bright ideas and we look forward to seeing what members say.

The Mancunian newspaper will be there so see how we operate, as they are announcing our first lunch coming up in Manchester in May.

Always, the lunch is 1.30 to 5pm at Finch’s in Finsbury Square (see their website for help finding it and getting there). We sit in a beautiful space at the back, behind a glass screen, and are well looked after by the eager staff. Parking in the street outside the pub is free after 1.30.

London Lunch was a blast

For the first time ever, people who had been in touch in the Clubhouse met and got to know one another better at our lunch. Some found they fancied each other, others had their friendship bonded. Our workshop was attended by over 20 people who took turns to say what they thought others found attractive about them, and what put people off, only to be told by the others how misconceived they were. They found this really useful. The workshop was recorded by Nikki Fox for BBC Radio 5 Live (everyone gave their permission).

We also welcomed Roxy Rezveny, associate producer at Vice magazine to speak to members in order to find the perfect subject for a documentary to compensate for the horrible Undateables series. The lunch was the most dynamic it’s ever been – with loads of what seemed like really beautiful people, young and not so young, all networking and enjoying. The idea of Outsiders Walks came up and these are now being organised. Long may this last.

Midlands Lunch Restarting

On Saturday 7th March we’ll be meeting at The Old Contemptible Pub, 176 Edmund Street, Birmingham, B3 2HB. It’s right opposite Snow Hill train station so you can get there by train, or it’s a short walk or taxi ride  from New Street Station. Lunches will regularly be on 1st Saturday of the month.

If you’d like to meet the organiser, Angharad outside the pub first (because you are shy and nervous to enter on your own) then you can email her on
angharad.brawn@mail.bcu.ac.uk.  She will give you a number so you can text us when you get there. Also if you would like to talk about your needs; i.e. if you have any communication difficulties then please feel free to email her to have a chat about what you need. If you want to have a look at the menus then you can see them on their website
http://www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk/theoldcontemptiblesedmundstreetbirmingham/food/
The pub wants a rough idea of how many people will be there, so let Angharad know that you’ll be coming.

Bristol Lunch attracting members from Wales, Devon and London!

The next event on Saturday 28th February, starts at 1pm at the Beaufort Arms, 55 North Road, Stoke Gifford, BS34 9PR. This lovely, accessible country inn is spitting distance from Bristol Parkway (walk straight ahead, out of the exit, and it’s on you right, round a bend). It’s also just off the M4. This makes it an ideal venue for people wanting a simple journey from central Bristol and other places. One of our members will be coming from Cardiff to learn about how to run a lunch so she can start a Cardiff one. If you need to ask any questions or be met outside because you’re shy, text Sarah on 07505 606 408.

London Lunch on 14th February looks to be a vibrant gathering

The regular lunch at the lovely Finch’s in Finsbury Square (see their website to find it) promises to be a wonderful opportunity for lots of members who’ve been corresponding in our website’s Clubhouse to actually meet. We will be taking the piss out of Valentine’s Day with a gay Cupid comedian and we’ll be running a body image workshop to learn what others find most attractive about us, and what might turn them off. 1.30pm to 5.30pm, BE THERE!
